The Centre for Obesity Control (COC) is a premier center of excellence in bariatric surgery, renowned for its personalized care, exceptional quality, and advanced technology. It is internationally recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) of the USA, a respected non-profit organization that accredits surgical centers and surgeons worldwide.
History and Mission
Founded in 2002, COC is dedicated to evaluating, developing, and expanding bariatric procedures to assist patients with morbid obesity. For patients for whom conventional weight-loss methods have failed, bariatric surgery offers a viable treatment option. Bariatric surgery not only promotes significant weight loss but also helps patients maintain that weight loss over time. This approach effectively manages or prevents various obesity-related comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnea, arthritis, and other disorders that arise when obesity remains untreated.
Experienced Team
The team at the Centre for Obesity Control (COC) comprises highly experienced clinicians specializing in nutrition management, endocrinology, counseling, and anesthetics. Administering anesthesia to obese patients requires exceptional expertise, and our esteemed senior anesthetist has been with us since 1991, successfully managing over 35,000 patients during his 26-year tenure. Most of our nursing staff have been part of COC for over 30 years, and we maintain an impressive nurse-to-patient ratio of one nurse for every two patients, one of the best in India.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
COC is located within the Agrawal Clinic, a 30-bed boutique surgical hospital with a rich legacy and a commitment to innovation. Established in 1974 by the renowned surgeon Dr. J. B. Agrawal, a pioneer of laparoscopic surgery in India, the clinic was the first to introduce surgical staplers in 1981, significantly reducing operating time. In 1991, it became the second hospital in India to perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgery and has since completed over 12,000 laparoscopic gallbladder procedures, making it the leader in this field in Mumbai.
Today, the Centre for Obesity Control (COC) is celebrated for its state-of-the-art surgical facilities, featuring specialized theaters equipped with cutting-edge endoscopic surgery technology. The Minimal Access Surgery Theater is outfitted with advanced equipment, including the latest energy systems essential for complex endosurgical procedures, such as ultrasonic shears (harmonic scalpel) and Ligasure.
Our fully equipped Surgical ICU boasts the latest life-saving devices, including ventilators, cardiac defibrillators, portable X-ray machines, arterial blood gas (ABG) analyzers, and central oxygen supply. The hospital also provides comprehensive diagnostic services, such as X-rays, sonography, fluoroscopy, 2D echocardiography, and stress tests.
COC has two specialized theaters designed specifically for bariatric surgery, featuring dedicated bariatric surgery tables, laminar flow systems, and high-definition laparoscopic camera systems. Our deluxe recovery rooms offer a range of amenities, including air conditioning, televisions, refrigerators, telephones, wireless internet, and microwave ovens. These rooms are furnished with oversized furniture to ensure the utmost comfort for bariatric patients.

Each month, we perform over 100 major laparoscopic procedures, including Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypasses, Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies, Laparoscopic gastric band placements, intragastric balloon insertions, laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries, endoscopic hernia repairs, laparoscopic fundoplications for acid reflux, cardiomyotomies for swallowing difficulties, laparoscopic spleen surgeries, laparoscopic kidney surgeries, laparoscopic adrenal gland surgeries, bowel surgeries, esophagus surgeries, kidney stone removals, and diagnostic procedures like thoracoscopy.
Training and Accreditation
Training surgeons in the art and safe practice of laparoscopy is one of our top priorities. Our training courses are endorsed by the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-surgeons (IAGES), and we have successfully trained over 150 surgeons from India and abroad.
